Sorry...

...that my blog has suffered a little lately and that I haven't been blogging as much. It's still going to be ignored for a couple of more weeks. Tomorrow after-school Andrea and I leave for Cambodia for five days and then I head home to Oregon. I have many things to blog about and I'm sure that by the time I get home I will have several more but currently my pictures are all in a scramble because I had to move them around to make copies for the parents of all my pictures. I hope that I will be able to quickly fix them and catch up. Either way...I'll see you on the other side of the world :D

Popsicle Fun

Last Thursday was my last time having my tutoring group. It has been getting warmer and so I decided to get ice cream to share with all of my tutoring students (which was really bad as I discovered something really yummy---mango on one side and milk/ice cream on the other side!). I allowed the girls to have some time at the beginning of the class to eat theirs.

Kristy decided that she didn't want hers so she gave it to Missy (who ate both in the same amount of the time the other two took to eat their one :D)

I love the little bit of ice cream on Amy's nose :)

Cute Rose!

Missy wasn't too excited about me taking her picture, so it was a bit of a struggle to get a good one.

Say Hello to My (New) Little Friend(s)

With the help of Katherine and her Mom I am the proud new owner of these two lovelies. I can't wait to travel with them :D

Be Afraid

Do you see this picture? Do you know what it is? SQUID!! And guess what, me (yes me) tried some tonight! It didn't really have any flavor but was just super chewy. We had it cut up in a salad, I tried a ring looking piece and then one of the tentacles with all the suction things. I was told that I should try it like this at the night market, it is very good bbq'ed...we will see.
Fish and Paper wanted to make us dinner one more time before we left, tonight was the most logical so they came over to make us some Thai and Indian food (Paper really likes to cook and experiment). They made some curry with coconut milk, a papaya salad, and then the salad with the squid (the rest of the salad was actually quite yummy- I even had seconds!)

Hot Cross Buns

I would have to say that one of the things that I am going to miss the most when I go home is the bakeries. We love to go to the bakery almost every day or other day and get freshly baked yummy treats, we usually try something new every time- sometimes we like what we try and sometimes we don't. I especially love the bakery that we go to, they always greet us with a smile and will almost always give us our food cheaper than they say that the food should cost.

3 Little Helpers

Everyday after lunch I am in charge of setting up the cots for naps. For the first four months of so I did it all by myself, I would usually finish lunch much quicker than everyone else and would just quickly set them up so that I could go call Mom or work on my lesson for the afternoon. But over a month ago I did something to my back and so I asked some of the five year olds to help me do it when they finished their lunches. They very willingly did it. Even though my back is much better and I don't need the help these 3 (Vanessa, Zoey, and Jeremy) continue to help me everyday. I appreciate that they willingly do it everyday without me asking them to. They make setting up the beds fun, not a day goes by that we aren't laughing about something or playing a game while doing it.

Not Your Average Picasso

Every time I draw something in class I begin by reminding the kids that I am not a very good drawer and that they might have to pretend that it looks like a (insert object here). On Friday we were talking about the beach (which is kind of funny as that is what we ended up picking as our whole week them this week--oh well!) and we were reading a book about going to the beach. It talked about building a sandcastle, so I drew this on the board so the kids could understand a little more what it was talking about. I would have to say that it didn't come out that bad and it really does look like a sandcastle (now the shells are another story :D)

PhotoHunt: Bubbles

This was taken at the Jolin Tsai concert we went to on the beach during Chinese New Year. I'm a huge fan of bubbles and wish that I could have taken some better ones, but she was completely surrounded by bubbles, so pretty and mystical.

A Month of Lunches

I have had a couple of people ask about what we eat at the school and I realized that this might be something that I wanted to remember anyway, so I decided that for my last month here I would take a picture everyday of what we eat. I will take a picture of the table with all the food and then a picture of my bowl after putting it all together. You will always see--main food, soup, and fruit.

One of my tutor students showed me this tonight, it's pretty cool!

of course after watching that I had to see what else they did, I liked these two...I think that the fireworks one is my favorite though!

KMI

I wanted you to have a look at what I do every Tuesday during my middle class. Several months ago the school purchased a program called KMI. Each child is given a binder with a list of different boxes that they should work on. Inside the binder they will find a little book and then some kind of activity. They work through the book until they are done and then I will sign it off, assigning them a new box. Under each category of activity there are different levels of difficulty, going from 1 to 12, currently the 3 year olds are 1/2, 4- 4/5, and 5-9/10. When they finish all the boxes in the level they are working on they will go to the next level.
The kids really enjoy doing them, even those that do it everyday after school (remember education is super duper important over here!). Every Tuesday morning when I walk into class they will say "today we do KMI!!"

Katherine

Charlie

They each do their activity on a mat, to help keep their stuff all together (I have to check each box before it can be put away every time to make sure that we don't lose pieces)

Half of the boxes

The other part. I pull out the 3 year olds for them, some of them could find their own boxes but it would take too much time so it's just easier for me to find them all.
